2007 Comic Movie Review
Sunday, November 11th, 2007 @ 4:22 pm

2007 was a big year for films based on comic books. Just to sheer quantity of movies this year was enough to make fanboys giggle. ‘07 definitely made up for the let down year of 2006. That year we saw the third X-Men movie and Superman Returns. Both movies were over hyped and hugely disappointing.
Here is a look back at the comic movies of 2007.

Ghost Rider. February 16, 2007.
Official Site
Ghost Rider was a huge fan favorite in the 1990’s. He was making appearances in just about every Marvel comic book, much like Wolverine does today. Unfortunately even with fantastic digital effects Ghost Rider didn’t translate well into a move. Perhaps it wold have done better without all the silly campyness. Regardless of it’s criticisms, Ghost Rider held the number one spot in the box office for two weeks straight.

300. March 9, 2007
Official Site
300 had movie goes leaving the theaters pounding their chest and yelling at the tops of their lungs. This beautiful film was made entirely in front of green screen making every shot a work of art. Sadly there were some morons out in the media that tried to apply political context to this movie. Worse still, was a bunch of upset Iranians who didn’t like how Persians were portrait in the film. What was laughable were all the people who said this movie wasn’t historically accurate. Well duh, what gave that away, the battle rhinos?

TMNT. March 23, 2007
Official Site
TMNT was as hardcore a movie could get under a PG rating. Credit really needs to go to the filmmakers who were forced to keep things PG but longed for an R rating. Maybe the sequel will be able to go PG13. This movie features some excellent voice talent like Patrick Stewart. His voice is so well known but you don’t think about his face while he was voicing the villain Winters. Splinter was played by the great, late Mako. Sadly this was his last work before he passed away.

Spider-Man 3. May 4, 2007
Official Site
Spider-Man 3 was perhaps the most anticipated film of 2007. Eager fans couldn’t wait to see Spidey in his black duds and face off against the hugely popular villain, Venom. But fans left the theater disapointed. This may be due to the fact that director Sam Raimi was pushed into including Venom into the film. He wasn’t in the original script and the whole thing felt tacked on. Then again there was enough cheese in this film that script change or not, fans may have been disapointed.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. June 15, 2007
Official Site
It isn’t often you get a sequel that is better than the first. But honestly could they have made a movie worse than the original FF? ROTSS was a blast. The Silver Surfer was amazing. Combining digital effects with Doug Jones’ moves and Laurence Fishburne’s voice created one of the coolest things to hit the screen in a while. The Silver Surfer definitely deserves his own movie. Maybe this time they will be bold enough to show Galactus in his giant purple glory.

Transformers. July 4, 2007
Official Site
Transformers was the victim of a lot of negative hype before it’s release. All that was forgotten after people got to see it. Personally seeing this movie was an amazing experience. Never before had I sat with an audience that constantly laughed out loud and cheered throughout a movie. It was an amazing energy that I’ll never forget.
