The Best Spider-Man Costume

Saturday, September 8th, 2007 @ 4:29 pm

Over Spider-Man’s 45 year old history he has mainly worn the iconic red and blue tights. However there has been a few occasions where Spidey needed to change things up. Here is a look at some of Spider-Man’s costumes. Vote for your favorite!

Classic Red and Blue

This is the original Spider-Man design from Steve Ditko. The costume has become iconic and is still used today. Most superheroes that started out in the 60’s don’t wear the same costume today but Ditko’s design is a masterpiece.

The Black Costume

Spider-Man originally came across this costume in the Marvel event known as the Secret Wars. Under the Black costume he’s had to deal with a lot. The costume turned out to be an alien symbiote which later attached itself to Eddie Brock and became Venom. Spidey later recreated the black costume and continued to be in black until Venom attacked his wife Mary Jane. The black costume was reminder to MJ of the attack so Spidey then returned to his red and blue costume.

Iron Spider-Man

This costume was a gift from Iron Man. This costume was more than a mere cosmetic change, it contained may useful gadgets. In the back the costume had three mechanical spider-arms. The suit gave Spider-Man limited gliding ability as well as limited bullet proofing. The mask gave him enhanced audio/visual and had a built-in fire/police/emergency scanner. Spider-man wore this costume during the Marvel event, Civil War. By the end of the war Spider-Man turned on Iron Man and stopped wearing the suit. Since then three “Spider-Men” named the Scarlet Spiders have appeared each of them wearing a Iron Spider-Man suit.

Scarlet Spider

The Scarlet Spider was Ben Reilly, a clone of Peter Parker.
Ben Reilly was created by the villain, Jackal who also cloned Parker’s girlfriend Gwen Stacey. Jackal put Reilly and Parker against each other to fight in a stadium. The two instead teamed up against the Jackal resulting in Ben Reilly’s apparent death. He actually had survived and went into deep depression and left New York. He named himself Ben Reilly after Peter Parker’s deceased Uncle Ben and May Parker’s maiden name, Reilly. Years later he returned to New York over news that Aunt May was dying. There he encountered Parker. At first they fought but soon after they began working together. Ben Reilly made a makeshift costume and the press named him the Scarlet Spider.

Ben Reilly Spider-Man

Ben Reilly eventually took over the mantle of Spider-Man when Peter Parker retired. Parker and Mary Jane were expecting a child and Parker was mislead into believing that he, not Reilly was the real clone. This lead to Parker asking that Reilly be the new Spider-Man. Reilly was later killed by the Green Goblin while trying to protect Peter Parker. It was revealed that Ben was indeed the clone this along with the apparent still birth of Parker’s child lead him to become Spider-Man once more.

Spider-Man 2099

Spider-Man 2099 was a future version of Spider-Man. In the ’90s Marvel published several 2099 books which were intended as the future of the Marvel Universe. Here Spider-Man was Miguel O’Hara he became Spider-Man when he was altered by a genetic modifying machine. The 2099 America was run by corrupt corporations. O’Hara was a genetic engineer at the Alchemax Corporation. He was in charge of a program which sought out to enhance humans by altering their DNA. O’Hara seeing the evil around him decided to quit. His boss wouldn’t allow it and exposed him to a highly addictive drug to make him stay. In hopes of killing the addiction O’Hara attempted to use his lab’s genetic modification machine. The attempt was sabotaged and as the result Miguel O’Hara gained a number of superhuman abilities. He gained Superhuman strength, speed, agility, reflexes, and durability. He had accelerated healing but not at the same level as Wolverine. He had enhanced vision and could see in the dark. He could climb walls with retractable finger and toe talons. He also had organic webbing he could shoot from his forearms and paralyzing fangs.
