A History of Wolverine Costumes. Which is your Favorite?
Friday, September 29th, 2006 @ 8:51 am

Wolverine has been around a long time now. He first appeared in Incredible Hulk #181 back in 1974. Over the past few decades Wolverine has gone through a few different looks.

Original Blue and Yellow
This is Wolverine’s original design by John Romita, Sr. It lasted from Incredible Hulk #180-#182 (1974). Romita admits he only knew what a Wolverine really was after he had created the image. He liked the name and the dictionary described a Wolverine as a small, ferocious cat-like creature. With that in mind he made a cat like mask with whiskers on it.

Classic Blue and Yellow
This revision of the original blue and yellow costume was an accident. Gil Kane’s accidentally extended the black eye panels on Wolverine’s mask on the cover of Giant-Size #1(1975). Wolverine had this costume until Uncanny X-Men #137(1980) and then again from X-Men #4(1991) up until New X-Men #113(2001).

Brow and Tan
John Byrne disliked the University of Michigan colors on this character and made the change. The football team may share the same name but a real Wolverine is not yellow and blue.

Leather
Not long after the first X-Men movie The comics followed suit and traded in their traditional costumes for leather duds. Frank Quitely redesigned all the X-Men’s costumes including Wolverine.
The leather look lasted from New X-Men #114 to #150(2001-2003)

Current
Created by John Cassaday, this costume throws back a little to the original mask design.
The newest costume premiered in Astonishing X-Men #1(2004). Cassaday was aiming for a hybrid of Wolverine’s yellow costume and his brown costume.
