Computer Frustration

For Fathers day my wife bought me a DVD writer for my computer. A very cool present for me to add onto my computer. I figured installing it would be a snap. This would be the first time I’ve opened up my tower. I had purchased a Dell about 6 months ago to replace my 6 year old HP. With the HP I had to unscrew the back to lift up the shell, so I assumed the Dell was the same.
So I unplug my Dell and place it on the table to start unscrewing the back. The thing is, there were no screws. The back of the shell was bolted on with rivets. So I call up my brother in-law who isn’t computer savvy but is known for ripping apart gadgets. He tells me to remove rivets I need to drill them out. So that is what I did. It was a huge pain in the ass but after about an hour, I drilled out all the rivets. After that I tried to slide off the shell but it as going no where. After another 20 minutes trying to take off the shell it wasn’t budging until I placed the tower on my lap and pushed and pulled and finally, a little bit lifted off. I was able to peek under the shell and could see that the side that came off was blocked and I couldn’t do a thing.
After about two hours of messing around and almost wrecking my computer I find a little switch on the back that allows a panel to be removed.
ARGG!

So now I’m in my tower and can slide in my new drive. No problems there. Plug it in close the panel and turn it on. Oh wait… now I can’t get into windows. By now it is 1 am so I decide to leave it and go to sleep.
The next morning I wake up and open up my tower once more to unplug the drive. I turn the computer on again and Windows starts with no problem. Knowing that the new drive is the problem (not me wrecking something else) I hit the net to see what I did wrong.
It turn out that I had to set the new drive as a slave for things to work properly.
Now I have a fully operational DVDR drive. I guess it was all al learning experience. LoL

I feel your pain brother. Computers are a nuisance… The worst part of it is I’m into PC’s as a career… Talk about a bad career move! At least I get to learn something new everyday. And a nifty thing called patience.
(The fact that you drilled holes in your PC was funny though!
